On our computer screens we often see words informing us that an upgrade is now available. It is our choice to download it. Could our planet’s dire situation with Covid-19 be considered an opportunity for a spiritual upgrade? Will we choose to download an upgrade to our spiritual wellness as adult believers? We are being reminded daily that we are in this together. Is that not an upgrade to our sometimes overly individualistic attitude? How often is doing it alone considered the ideal? How often is the goal focused on who has the power or who is in charge? Now we are reminded of our inability to control something as simple as meeting our friends or having a party. The loneliness of sheltering in place invites us to recognize our need to be interconnected.
The distancing requirement stifles our human need to hold hands, to give and receive a hug, and just to sit next to a friend. When we are relieved of the need to stay six feet apart will we be grateful for the simple gift of touch?
Because the places we gathered for worship had to be closed, have we upgraded our understanding of the Almighty God? Do we rejoice that God is bigger and beyond any buildings we thought could hold the Maker of the universe? Do we welcome and share our God through the gifts available to us? Consider how technology invites us to worship and pray together in virtual environments we never envisioned before?
When we reach a new normal will the upgrade to interconnections enhance our living as brothers and sisters? Will our interconnection with one God for all be the uniting force in designing an environment upgraded by love? New heroes and a new appreciation of life are benefits of the upgrade. Do we say yes to the download?
