Worship and Doubt

In Matthew 28:16-20 we read that when the disciples saw Jesus, “they worshipped, but they doubted.” Is this not an amazing sentence? In the actual physical presence of Jesus, his disciples doubted. Yet when Jesus approached them, he trusted them so much he sent them on the mission dear to his heart. “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations….”

Let’s recall who some of these disciples were. Peter had denied him; Thomas doubted his resurrection. All of them had run away; they hid because they were afraid. In John 14:9 we see Philip who just doesn’t get it. Jesus says to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? And then we have James and John who have their eyes on power.” Grant us to sit, one at your right  hand and one at your left in your glory.” (Mark 10:37)

And yet Jesus trusts them to do his work. All he asks is their faith. In John 14:12, Jesus promises that they will not only do what he does, but will do even greater works.  And then he promises that they will not be left alone. He assures them that he and the Father will live with them, and an Advocate will be sent to them.

Worship and doubt in fear

And when does this Spirit come? When they are gathered in the midst of their greatest fears, with the specter of death around them.

Are you affirmed by the trust that Jesus has in you to do the work of God in our world? Are you facing the challenges of life steadfast in the faith of your union with the Trinity? May the faith and trust that Jesus has in you lift you up. May all you do unite you in Jesus and proclaim that your life is lived for the greater glory of God.
